Boat trips in Ibiza: the best way to discover its coves
Ibiza feels completely different when you see it from the sea. Cliffs, small caves, crystal-clear waters and some of the island’s best-known coves take on a whole new dimension when you arrive by boat. That is why taking one of the many boat trips in Ibiza is one of the best ways to explore its coastline, especially if you want to combine swimming, scenery and a different kind of day away from the roads.
From routes around the north of the island to full-day trips towards Formentera, there are options to suit almost every kind of stay.
Why explore Ibiza by boat
Access to coves and hidden spots that are difficult to reach by land
Ibiza’s roughly 200 kilometres of coastline are home to secluded corners, cliffs and swimming spots that can be difficult to access from land. Travelling by boat lets you experience this landscape from a different perspective and stop whenever you feel like going for a swim or snorkelling.
That said, having the freedom to sail does not mean you can anchor anywhere. In the Balearic Islands, it is generally forbidden to drop anchor on Posidonia oceanica meadows, a protected species that plays a vital role in the marine ecosystem. In specially protected areas, such as Ses Salines Natural Park, there are also designated zones where anchoring is regulated.
A different way to experience the island
Instead of driving from cove to cove looking for somewhere to park, you can spend the day sailing, swimming and enjoying the coastline.
There is no need to try to cover half the island in a single day either. In many cases, choosing two or three good stops and enjoying them properly makes for a much better plan.
Types of boat trips in Ibiza
Boat hire without a skipper
If you hold the appropriate boating licence, hiring a boat without a skipper gives you the greatest freedom to plan your own route.
There is an important change in the regulations worth knowing about. From 1 October 2026, the exemption that allowed certain small motorboats to be operated without a licence is restricted to private use. This means that anyone hiring a motorboat without a skipper must hold the relevant qualification to operate it.
Balearic boating regulations also require rental companies to verify that customers hiring a boat without crew have the necessary licence before the rental agreement is completed.
Organised trips with a skipper
If you do not have a boating licence, or simply want to leave the navigation to someone else, an organised trip with a professional skipper is usually the easiest option.
As well as handling the boat, an experienced skipper knows the coastline and can adapt the route according to the wind, sea conditions and weather on the day. Options range from a few hours on the water to full-day excursions focused on different parts of Ibiza or Formentera.
Private charters and catamarans
If you are travelling as a group, celebrating a special occasion or simply want more space, you can also book private boats or catamarans.
Before booking, check exactly what is included in the price, particularly the skipper, fuel, drinks, snorkelling equipment and any potential extras. Two options that look similar at first can end up costing quite different amounts.
The best boat routes in Ibiza
Northern coves route: Benirràs, Portinatx and Cala Xarraca
Northern Ibiza offers a particularly attractive coastline for sailing, with pine forests, cliffs and clear waters.
A route through this area can combine Benirràs, Cala Xarraca and Portinatx, with smaller stops along the way if sea conditions allow. It is a great option if you want to discover a quieter and less developed side of the island.
West coast route to Es Vedrà
The west coast is home to some of Ibiza’s most recognisable landscapes. Starting from the Sant Antoni area, a route can take you past Cala Bassa, Platges de Comte and Cala Tarida before continuing towards Cala d’Hort and the area around Es Vedrà.
If timing and sea conditions are right, sailing back around sunset makes this one of the most memorable routes on the island.
Southern coves and Formentera route
Another of the classic boat trips in Ibiza follows the south coast before crossing towards Formentera.
From Ibiza, you can sail past Es Cavallet, Ses Salines, Cala Jondal or Porroig before heading towards the north of Formentera.
In this area, it is especially important to respect Posidonia protection measures and the regulated anchoring zones within Ses Salines Natural Park, which covers parts of both Ibiza and Formentera.
Practical tips for your boat trip
Best time of year to sail
The widest range of boat hire and excursions is available during the warmer months. June and September are particularly good options if you want pleasant sea temperatures and slightly fewer crowds than in July and August.
Whatever the time of year, weather conditions should always determine the route. Balearic boating regulations require rental companies to remind users to check the daily marine weather forecast for their sailing area.
What to bring and precautions to take
Sun protection, a hat, water, swimwear, a towel and a light layer for the journey back should always be in your bag.
Non-slip footwear is also a good idea, and if you are prone to seasickness, it is worth taking precautions before departure. Always follow the skipper’s instructions, respect designated swimming areas and comply with anchoring restrictions.
And remember, you are on holiday. You do not need to visit six coves just to make the boat hire feel worthwhile.
Ports and marinas to depart from
The best departure point depends on the route you want to take. Sant Antoni is especially convenient for exploring the west coast and its coves. Ibiza Town offers easy access to the south of the island and Formentera, while Port Esportiu de Santa Eulària is a good base for exploring the east and north-east. Ports de les Illes Balears lists Sant Antoni and Santa Eulària among Ibiza’s main nautical facilities.
Boat trips in Ibiza with accommodation at Ryans
Choosing where to stay based on the area you want to explore can make planning your boat trip much easier.
If you want to sail around western Ibiza, Ryans Lola's is a great base close to Sant Antoni Bay.
For departures from Ibiza Town or trips towards Formentera, you can stay at Ryans La Marina or Ryans Budget, both conveniently located for getting around the town centre.
And if you would rather combine the sea, the beach and the atmosphere of Ibiza Town, Ryans Ibiza is another good starting point for planning your route.
